I just purchased a piece of software that cost a few hundred bucks.
While I was on the sales page I added my name and email to the optin form on their page as well for free info.
I completed the order and immediately downloaded the software.
Today I checked my email and clicked on the aweber “confirm” link from this seller’s optin form and was directed to their “thanks for confirming” page and front and center was a “$200 off” ticket for the software I just purchased.
How stupid is this?
I’m quite agitated now that I spent an extra $200 on software that is easily handing out discounts to everyone on this list immediately.
I feel pretty burned and I’m sure a lot of people would take this even harsher. It also tells me that this person doesn’t value their software like they claim they do AND most importantly it teaches me that in the future I should never “impulse” buy from this person because there is probably a discount somewhere.
Now…a better way to use a discount is to add a code to an autoresponder sequence at the end. Send them info on your product, testimonials, benefits etc. for 7 mailings and at the end something like:
“I’m not sure why you haven’t yet grabbed your copy of xxxx. You’ve seen the amazing benefits of having this for yourself and read the incredible testimonials of others who have used it.
But…maybe you’re still on the fence. So for a limited time I’d like to give you a “push” to grab your copy today. Here is a discount coupon for $xxx off this powerful software. If you’ve been waiting to make your purchase then there is no better day than today, right now.
P.S. This discount is top secret- please don’t share this code.”
Overall though, I still don’t like discounts because they devalue your product. I much prefer giving a “push” by adding value. For example, a bonus report, audio or other item of value is preferable to a discount to give your prospects that extra kick to order now.

Awesome tip man...I made a similar mistake (but not that big) for my own software recently..and now I know how buyers may feel if they look at the discount elsewhere. Thank God..discount was available on a diff product..your post saved me from a big future hassle :)
Cheers,
